The object of the study: marriage and family of rural and urban Orthodox Ukrainian population of the Left Bank Ukraine in the second half of the 18th ‒ the first half of the 19th centuries. The subject of the study: features and specificity of marriage and family relations, partner statuses, processes of marriage registration among the Orthodox parish communities of the Left Bank Ukraine in the indicated period of time, as a demographic mechanism and a socio-cultural phenomenon. The purpose of the study is to carry out a comprehensive historical analysis of matrimonial, socio-cultural, legislative, regulatory, religious and demographic factors that determined the marriage and family relations of the population of the studied region in the second half of the 18th – the first half of the 19th centuries. The results of the study: based on the analysis of the written sources, the marriage and family in Ukrainian society in the second half of the 18th – the first half of the 19th centuries were studied as interrelated constructs produced by socio-cultural, physiological, socio-economic processes of the population's life. To study them, an interdisciplinary approach and historical and demographic methods are combined. The permissive and church statistical documentation for marriage are studied; the matrimonial requirements in accordance with Christian and civil law are clarified; the features of matrimonial cohorts, locations of newly created families, marriage-market relations, marriage-class mobility are revealed; age-sex and seasonal indicators of marriage are analyzed; certain deviations from the standard models of marital behavior of the Ukrainian population are revealed. The scope of use: the results can be used in the process of writing thematic, popular scientific and generalizing works on the history of Ukraine in the 18th – the first half of the 19th centuries, historical demography, local social history, everyday history, social anthropology, socio-religious history, “women's history”, historical sociology, history of the native land, family history. The study results will be useful in the conclusion of educational and methodological literature, training courses for humanitarian faculties of higher educational institutions, textbooks for schools and the introduction of history education in the educational process of schoolchildren.
