In the dissertation for the first time the systematic analysis of tendencies of development of pedagogical ideas and educational activity of the Ukrainian writers of the Western Ukraine (the end of the XVIII century ‒ 1939) is carried out. The periodization of the literary process in Western Ukraine (end of the XYIII century – 1939) through the prism of historical and pedagogical dimension is proposed, five main periods of development of Western Ukrainian literature are identified: 1) church-educational (mid-1770–1820), divided into two stages: 1772–1805 and 1806–1820); 2) awakening and enlightenment (1830 ‒ the first half of the 1870, has two stages, which distinguishes 1848); 3) the rise of literary life in the second half of the 1870–1914; 4) military-revolutionary upheavals of 1914–1919/20; 5) the interwar period of the twentieth century, which traces the two stages of the 1920 and 1930. Each of these periods has its own features and characteristics of ideological, value and artistic style, expressed in the artistic reflections of a wide range of problems of education, upbringing and personality development. Their carriers and producers were representatives of several generations of Western Ukrainian writers. Given the above scientific and theoretical positions, the realities of socio-political development and the content and nature of the literary process, etc., identified the existence of the period under consideration, five generations of writers (the first falls on the 70. XVIII ‒ 10 XIX century, the second ‒ in the 20 ‒ late 40 of the XIX century, the third ‒ in 1848–70/80 of the XIX century, the fourth ‒ in 1870/80. XIX ‒ early XX century; fifth ‒ in the 20–30 of the XX century); each of them had certain common features and similar views on the problems of education, upbringing, theory and practice of pedagogy. The ideological-thematic and genre diversity of pedagogically oriented works of Ukrainian writers is analyzed, the personification of the literary process in the western Ukrainian lands is carried out through the prism of coverage of educational problems. The creative achievements of writers who were teachers are highlighted. Scientific-pedagogical and educational-methodical achievements of Ukrainian writers of the mentioned period are revealed. The essence of pedagogical views of Ukrainian writers on the problem of education of the Ukrainian people is analyzed and generalized. The concept of categorical apparatus is specified. The experience of educational activity of Ukrainian writers of the researched period on the variety of its forms and methods is summarized (writing works of art for additional reading by students at school and abroad, promoting the distribution of Ukrainian books among children and youth, theatrical performances, folk readings, etc.); the directions of creative use of pedagogical ideas and experience of educational activity of Ukrainian writers of the end of the XVIII century are outlined ‒ 30 of the twentieth century in terms of reforming modern domestic education; further development of ideas about the essence and content of educational activities of the Ukrainian intelligentsia in the field of preservation of national traditions, culture, language, school of the late eighteenth century – 1939. A number of little-known works of domestic writers and archival documents are analyzed and put into scientific circulation. The methodology of cognition of development of tendencies of pedagogical ideas and publiceducational activity is improved. The problem of development of pedagogical ideas and educational activity of Ukrainian writers of Western Ukraine (end of XVIII ‒ 30 of XX century) is relevant and significant in today's conditions. Creative use of pedagogical views of Western Ukrainian writers of the period under study in secondary and higher education institutions of independent Ukraine will contribute to effective reform of the modern educational system, improvement of pedagogical technologies of teaching pedagogical disciplines, return from oblivion of little-known literary and pedagogical personalities. deep study and use in the educational space as a factor in the national education of the younger generation.
