In the thesis for the first time the systematic retrospective analysis of the theory and practice of forming the values of student youth by means of school sports in the USA during the XXth and at the beginning of the XXIst centuries has been carried out; the theoretical and methodological bases of the research have been characterized and the conceptual and categorical apparatus has been defined. The content of scientific approaches, which form the fundamental research field of the process of forming the values of student youth by means of school sports, has been substantiated and elucidated (categorical, axiological, ambivalent, historical, humanistic, civilizational, culturological, cross-cultural, comparative). The interpretation of the socio-pedagogical phenomenon "school sport" has been generalized, taking into account various aspects of the organization and functioning of educational and training processes in general secondary education, as well as the views of domestic and foreign scientists on this issue. There have been elucidated the scientific and theoretical bases of forming the values of a personality by means of physical culture and sports in the world dimension; there have been clarified the socio-political, socio-economic, cultural and educational preconditions, as well as there have been highlighted the historical and theoretical determinants of the formation, development and transformation of the system of physical education and school sports in the United States. The organizational and methodological principles have been determined and the ways of forming the values of American youth by means of school sports have been clarified. There has been conducted a cross-cultural comparison of receptions of sport and its values among adults and adolescents in Ukraine and the United States. There have been defined perspective development directions of the school sports system in Ukraine on the basis of the American experience implementation.
