The given research paper investigates the characterological problems in the works of Ukrainian pedagogues of the 60s of the 19th century and the 60s of the 20th century. The social and historic pre-conditions of the appearance and interpreting the problems of character formation in Ukrainian pedagogics are analyzed. The result of the research shows that the scholars-pedagogues regard the character ideal as the development of moral and will traits, which define the sense of purpose and ability to overcome difficulties. The structure of character includes emotional, intellectual, will, valuably-directed spheres, which concentrate around the main aim. The research has proved that the best thing in formation of the personality's character according to pedagogues is the organization of the personality's work on the ground of purposefulness, independence, activity in conformity with personality's inborn qualities, abilities and possibilities, competitiveness, collectiveness, and what is the most important, selfdevelopment. It is shown that the Ukrainian pedagogues, who study characterology, formulated such ideas which might be used by contemporary pedagogics with the aim of formation of a personality with active life position who can successfully act under the conditions of civil society and market economy.
