Essay

The thesis studies transformation of Byzantine iconographic canon in the art of nonclassic aesthetics of the ХХ-th century. The concepts of "idea" and "symbol" as main objects of representation of icon and contemporary art are analyzed - as well as such stylistic features of icon in the XX-th century art as iconographic deformations, conventional character of image and "literatureness" of art work in the context of appealing to the Byzantine tradition in the art trends of Western modernism and postmodernism, Ukrainian and Russian avant-guard and in the unofficial late soviet art. The evolution of such characteristics of icon as representation of space and time, usage of reverse perspective, theory of light and symbolic language of colours in the art of nonclasic aesthetics is explored. The light is also thrown upon the mutual principle of icon and contemporary art - the presentation of transcendental sacrum. Comparative formal analysis of theory and stylistics of contemporary art and aesthetical programme of icon demonstrates important results as for study of icon, as well as for investigation of the heterogenous art of nonclassic aesthetics.
