Essay

The thesis deals with the research of structural, semantic, functional and stylistic peculiarities of the occasional words in Modern French. It investigates innovation speech processes in their close connection with economic, political and social changes and indicates spheres of social life which are suppliers of occasional new formations. On the basis of a great number of texts of mass media, Internet sites and fiction the clear distinction of the notions of occasionalism, neologism, potential word has been substantiated. For the first time the compehensive analysis of new lexical formations in structural and semantic as well as pragmatic and functional aspects has been carried out; the role of new occasional lexical formations in shaping social opinion and speech behaviour of communicants has been defined; the stock of new occasional formations of the last decades has been systematized and the trends of their semantic evolution have been traced; functions of definitive occasional units in different types of discourse have been outlined; the author's explanatory dictionary has been presented and patterns of lan-guage game have been produced. The work proves that the prior role in occasional word perception belongs to the context which is a limited concentration of speech efforts necessary for understanding a word. It comprises specific features of the communicative situation and peculiarities of a speaker's personality, programing emergence and development of occasionalisms, their form, contents and functioning. Pragmatics of occasional words is revealed most effectively in media discourse and Internet discourse which are characterized by the variety of devices to express informa-tion as well as by potential ability to influence the perception of an addressee. It creates an exact pragmatic effect, which functions as the medium of perfect reflection of reality. The use of the occasionalisms in these discourses is stipulated by the necessity to economize speech efforts and by attempts to achieve expressiveness.
