Vygnanska I. Semantics and Pragmatics of the Bible Phraseological Units in Modern French Mass-media Discourse

The survey of the problems connected with the research of pragmatic-communicative and structural-semantic peculiarities of the Bible Phraseological Units (BPU), the peculiarities of their development and functioning determine the main priorities in the development of Modern Linguistics. In the First Chapter, "Biblical Phraseology as the Object of the Research in the System of the French Language", an extensive survey of academic, subject-related literature was conducted; the main theoretical statements of the Dissertation are laid out. Moreover, there were discovered a range of investigation lines, each being a certain reflection of conceptual orientation of different phraseology schools. Biblical phraseology (BP) in this Dissertation is presented as a dynamic, structured subsystem, which is not only limited to the Bible referential scope, but also includes a variety of lexemes borrowed from various sources as a result of constant processes of transformation and that by virtue of their latitude connotative signs tends to be used in the domain of publicist style. There were considered categorical concepts of a phraseological unit and BPU, directly or indirectly borrowed from the Bible and characterized by a peculiar variety of expressive and evaluative-emotional nuances that proved to be a unique linguistic phenomenon that serves as an important tool for constructing argumentative presentation of information. The subject-conceptual classification of the BPU in lexicographical sources is suggested as well as the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors that contribute to the process of phraseologization of fragments of any biblical text are elucidated. The Dissertation presents the BPU as units, possessing certain amount of information in peculiar national-cultural environment, which is a means of detecting national-cultural connotation. The BPU reflect the typical representation (prototypes), perform the function of national stereotypes and cultural viewpoints.
