Essay

The dissertation presents an integral retrospective analysis of the problem of content of school textbooks on fine arts in the national pedagogical thought of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and pedagogical reflections of researchers on the determined problem are systematized taking into account the provisions of the chronological and problem-thematic approaches. On the basis of the selected criteria, the stages were identified and the leading trends in the development of the problem of content of school textbooks on fine arts in the period of the second half of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st century were identified: the first stage (1955-1966) – the stage of preparation of the first pilot textbooks on fine art on the background of the polytechnic content of the general secondary education and intensive development of the theory of school textbooks. The main trends in the development of the content of school textbooks on fine arts at this stage were: compliance with didactic principles, subordination to the purpose and objectives of polytechnic studies, ensuring the unity of the theoretical and practical components, ideological and moral orientation, inclusion of artistic and applied works in order to form graphic literacy among schoolchildren; ІІ stage (1967–1990) – the stage of development and testing of experimental textbooks on fine arts in accordance with the current reforms of general secondary education and the development of domestic didactics in the field of educational content. The development of the content of school textbooks on fine art at this stage was characterized by the following trends: the reflection of the four-component structure of the content of education; shifting emphasis on the transfer of the spiritual, emotional and moral, value-orientation content of fine art through images on a plane, in volume, in space, perceptions of art and objects of reality; the focus on the education of students in independence, perseverance, cleanliness, diligence, conscious choice of profession; ІІІ stage (1991–2004) – the stage of improvement of the content and structure of school textbooks on fine arts in connection with the expansion of tasks of artistic and aesthetic education of children and young people in the conditions of reforming national schooling. His main tendencies were: the domination of the two components of the content of education – "experience of creative activity" and "emotional and value attitude"; expansion of the component of "scientific knowledge" at the expense of information on the nature, society, historical and architectural monuments, Ukrainian arts and crafts; structuring of study material by subject blocks or cross-cutting themes in the form of scripts of lessons; creation of space for independent work of students.
