Essay

On the basis of the theoretical and empirical research of the functional psychic states as the form of the integrated manifestation of the personality traits and the dynamics of psychic processes, determined by the possible change of the psychic states under the demanding work or life situations a new approach to operationalising emotional stability and its "reflected" diagnostics is substantiated. The еmergence of the state of emotional stress in response to the demanding work or life situation or retention of the optimal functional state (homeostasis) are claimed to be viewed as alter ego of the emotional instability or emotional stability respectively. A computer model for predicting emotional stability from the characteristics of an information-processing cognitive activity performance under failure stress has been developed and empirically validated. Other forms of the so called "reflected" diagnostics of emotional stability are described (emotional intelligence, preferred coping strategies, psychosomatic disorders, humor styles, etc.).
